May 18, 2009 :: 2009 Walter J. Gores Excellence in Teaching Award to Mark Tendall.

Mark TendallMark Tendall, Lecturer in Economics and Associate Director of the Introductory Economics Center is a 2009 recipient of the Walter J. Gores Award for Excellence in Teaching. The Gores Award is the University’s highest award for excellence in teaching. The Walter J. Gores Award recognizes undergraduate and graduate teaching excellence. As the University's highest award for teaching, the Gores Award celebrates achievement in educational activities that include lecturing, tutoring, advising, and discussion leading.


Sep 30, 2011 :: Recent Ph.D. Graduates awarded the National Tax Association Dissertation Award.

Marika Cabral and Neale Mahoney have been selected by the National Tax Association as winners of the Outstanding Doctoral Dissertation award.Their award will be presented at the 104th Annual Conference on Taxation where they will each deliver their dissertations.Marika Cabral is currently an Assistant Professor at the University of Texas at Austin and Neale Mahoney is an Assistant Professor at the University of Chicago Booth School of Business.


May 04, 2009 :: American Economic Association elects John Pencavel as a Distinguished Fellow for 2009.

May 16, 2011 :: Professor Kalina Manova selected as an IRiSS Faculty Fellow

The Stanford Institute for Research in the Social Sciences, IRiSS,  has granted Kalina Manova one of a few competitive Faculty Fellowships for 2011-2012 for her ongoing projects on China's international trade and investment. The program brings together faculty members from multiple departments to promote cutting-edge research and stimulate intellectual interactions across disciplines.


Dec 17, 2010 :: Professor Robert Hall gives Presidential Address at AEA and, Professors Tim Bresnahan and Monika Piazzesi newly elected to offices of the AEA.

Professor Robert Hall gives Presidential Address at AEA and, Professors Tim Bresnahan and Monika Piazzesi newly elected to offices of the AEA. As outgoing President of the American Economic Association (AEA), Robert Hall will give the Presidential Address at the meeting in January. The Presidential Address and awards ceremony will be held on Jan 8th at the Sheraton in Denver. Professor Tim Bresnahan has been elected one of the Vice Presidents of the AEA for the 2011 year and Professor Monika Piazzesi is a new member of the Executive Committee. http://www.vanderbilt.edu/AEA/

May 17, 2011 :: Professor B. Douglas Bernheim invited to give series of Keynote Lectures at the 2011 ECORE Summer School.

Professor B. Douglas Bernheim will give a series of Keynote Lectures on "Choice and Welfare" at the 2011 ECORE Summer School, which will take place on 23-26 May 2011 at the Université Catholique de Louvain in Louvain-la-Neuve. He will also be a Plenary Speaker at the National Conference on Teaching Economics and Research in Economic Education, sponsored by the American Economic Association’s Committee on Economic Education, June 1-3, 2011.


Mar 04, 2010 :: April 19 & 20, 2010 Arrow Lecture given by Jean Tirole of the Toulouse School of Economics.

The 2010 Arrow Lecture series will take place on April 19 and 20.   On Monday afternoon Professor Jean Tirole of the Toulouse School of Economics will present: "Laws and Norms."  The general public is welcome to attend the Monday lecture relating to material incentives and weighing the resulting costs and benefits of different courses of action.  On Tuesday he will present "Overcoming Adverse Selection: How Public Intervention Can Restore Market Functioning," one of his research papers relating to optimal negotiation strategies.  Place and time to be announced. 

Professor Jean Tirole is one of the world's leading economic theorists and has made seminal contributions in the areas of game theory, industrial organization and corporate finance.  Tirole is director of the Foundation Jean-Jacques Laffont - Toulouse School of Economics and scientific director of the Industrial Economics Institute (IDEI) in Toulouse.   After receiving his PhD from MIT in 1981, he worked as a researcher at l'École nationale des ponts et chaussées until 1984. From 1984-1991 he worked as a Professor of Economics at MIT. He was president of the Econometric Society in 1998 and of the European Economic Association in 2001. He is still affiliated with MIT, where he holds a visiting position.

The series is named in honor of Nobel Laureate Kenneth Arrow, the Joan Kenney Professor of Economics and Professor of Operations Research, emeritus.  Professor Arrow has made many contributions to welfare economics, social choice theory and collective decision-making.
