Stanford's online Web catalog, Socrates, is the primary finding tool
for identifying Stanford dissertations.
- If you know the author or title of a dissertation, look it
up as if it were a regular book.
- To identify Stanford dissertations from a particular Stanford
Department, one can use Socrates Web catalog as follows:

Call Numbers for Stanford Dissertations
Stanford dissertations typically have special call numbers beginning
with 3781 followed by year and first letter of author's last name
(e.g., 3781 1974 .L). Actual Library locations vary. Consult the detailed
record display to determine location and availability. Note that most
dissertations in the humanities and social sciences are currently
housed in the Stanford Auxiliary Library (SAL). Some libraries may
use call numbers other than the 3781 category; for example, the Jackson
Business Library uses the Library of Congress call numbers beginning
with HF 5006 .S7.
Circulating Copies of Stanford Dissertations
The stack copy of a Stanford dissertation can be checked out by qualified
borrowers. For those Stanford dissertations shelved in the Stanford
Auxiliary Library (SAL), users can ask for delivery to the Stanford
Library of their choice by using the "Request this item" link in the
Socrates catalog.
Archival Copies of Stanford Dissertations
The Special
Collections Department keeps a repository copy of Stanford dissertations
in the University Archives. Users can make a request in Special Collections
to use this copy. Requests are filled in one day. Archival copies

not fully explained at the UMI Web site. Clicking on the PDF symbol
for a given dissertation will NOT accomplish the download. The basic
steps are:
Perform a search and obtain search results list
Check the box next to the desired title
Click on "Add to Shopping Cart"
Click on "Begin Order Checkout Process"
Follow the Checkout Process Instructions and note the PIN number
and URL for later downloading of the file
E-mail notification of file availability is available. There
is no charge to Stanford users for PDF files for Stanford dissertations
for years 1989 forward.
Dissertation Databases
The Dissertation
Abstracts database provides indexing of virtually all doctoral
dissertations accepted by U.S. and Canadian institutions since 1861.
Abstracts are included beginning with 1980. Selected masters theses
are covered after 1962, with abstracts available after 1988. The database
is restricted to the Stanford community.
For both searching
and free downloading (for Stanford users only) full text PDF files
of Stanford dissertations for the years 1989 forward, see the section
above on Full Text PDF Files .
Dissertations through Interlibrary Services
Non-Stanford Users, Please Note: Stanford Dissertations are
available via interlibrary lending only on a restricted basis. Please
see the
Interlibrary Lending Policy.
Stanford users may obtain, without charge, dissertations available
at other institutions via
Interlibrary Borrowing. Please consult the Information
Center staff ([email protected])
if you have questions.
Purchasing Dissertations
Copies of dissertations done at other institutions are ordinarily
not purchased for the Stanford's library collections. Stanford users
should consult with the appropriate subject selector if they would
like to recommend that an exception is justified. If a dissertation
is part of our collection, you can be find it through Socrates by
author and/or title.
Individuals who wish to purchase their own copy of a dissertation
can do so directly through UMI. For information about prices and
phone numbers, see
ProQuest Online Dissertation Services. Please note that Stanford
University Libraries are NOT participants in the Dissertation
Express program, which means you will need to pay for copies you
order.
Stanford University does not sell copies of dissertations. Stanford
dissertations can be purchased through the service described above.
